What Documents Does Your CPA Need to File Your Taxes?

The time has come for you to schedule your appointment with your local McKinney CPA. Tax season is here and whether this is your first time filing with a CPA or you have utilized a professional many times before, we always want you to be prepared with what to expect when you arrive at your appointment.

When you have a CPA file your taxes it is important to have the proper tax documents available for them. This makes everything go much more smoothly, the more you can provide for them, the better.

So what are the documents you need to have with you when you arrive at your tax filing appointment with your CPA? We have the most important documents listed for you here:

Identification Documents

To verify who you are on your taxes, your CPA will need your photo ID. You will also need the social security numbers and birth dates for yourself, your spouse, and any dependents that you will be claiming on your tax return.

Having the social security numbers correct on your tax return is very important. One wrong number can cause the IRS to reject your tax return, and you will have to re-file.

Income Documents

If you worked as an employee you should have received a W-2 by January 31st and will need to bring this in to your scheduled appointment. If you worked as a freelancer, contractor, or other non-employee type job and received a 1099-MISC this is the income document your CPA will want to see.

In addition to any types of job related income, you may have earned income from things such as unemployment, interest, or social security. If you made these types of income they  will also need to be reported on your taxes.

Expense Documents

When you have expenses during the year, it is important to keep record of these to help you during tax time. If you donated to a charity, contributed to your IRA, had medical expenses, or things of that nature, you should bring receipt of those expenses in. Having those tax documents may help you lower your tax bill.

If you own a business, keeping track of your business expenses are very important as well. Some common business expenses are:

  • Mileage
  • Advertising
  • Commission
  • Office Supplies
  • Wages
  • Cost of Goods Sold
  • Rent of Office Space
